Open call for the third edition of the Finnish performing arts showcase Performing HEL starts on November 4, 2020. (Please note, that the open call for the upcoming edition of the showcase has ended on December 14, 2020.)

Taking place in Helsinki on 2-5 September 2021, Performing HEL will present some of the most interesting elements of Finnish* performing arts (theatre, dance and circus) that are suitable for international audiences and touring to Finnish and international festival and theatre program presenters.

*) Artists and companies who live, work and/or get funding from Finland are eligible to apply.

A total of 4–6 full-length performances, 6 demo performances, and 10 pitches will be selected for the program. Some of the performances will be selected from the domestic program of the Helsinki Festival 2021 and/or from Performing HEL partners’ domestic program.

There are a total of three application options:

  • full-length performances
  • demo performances of pieces that have already premiered or future pieces/ideas (20–30 mins)
  • 15-minute pitches of existing or future pieces.

Applicants may indicate which category they wish their application to be considered for, but the final decision on categories lies with the selection jury. Only one application from each applicant (artist/company) will be accepted. The pieces selected must be suitable for touring and may be intended for different audiences.

For the 2021’s showcase the selections are made by Manager of International Affairs Katarina Lindholm (Dance Info Finland), Head of International Development Lotta Nevalainen (CircusInfo Finland), Director Linnea Stara (Theatre Info Finland TINFO), Producer Eeva Bergroth, Director Erik Söderblom (Espoo City Theatre), Dramaturg Maria Lundström (The Swedish Theatre), Dramaturg Eva Buchwald (The Finnish National Theatre) and Artistic Director Marko Ahtisaari (Helsinki Festival).

The application period ends on the 14th of December 2020 at 17.00 (UTC+2), with the jury aiming to have made its selections for the program in January-February 2021. Artists and groups selected for the showcase program will be paid a fee. The program will be published in March 2021.

It is highly recommended that the artists and companies planning to apply to the showcase also attend the workshops that concentrate on international work, touring and dossier, marketing, and sales pitch and follow up.
